Beyond the Diagnosis: Dr. Jalelah Abdul Raheemā€™s Parenting Journey of Resilience and Autism

As an integrative pediatrician and mental health coach, I assist families as they navigate through the obstacles and successes of raising a child with autism. I’m passionate about bringing more awareness on how children with autism can thrive and ways to empower parents and guardians. I was excited when Dr. Jalealah Abdul-Raheem, decided to write a book and share her journey with others. I had the pleasure of interviewing her recently on my podcast Raising Resilient Minds.

A Personal Perspective on Resilience

In the first episode, I explored Dr. Jalelah Abdul-Raheem’s personal view on resilience. As a nurse educator and a mother to a son with special needs, she shares valuable insights about the ups and downs of raising a child on the autism spectrum. For her, resilience isn’t just about bouncing back; it’s about finding strength together as a family. What does resilience mean to you as a parent? How have your own experiences shaped your understanding of resilience in your family?

Practical Strategies for Building Resilience

Parents of children with autism often face behavioral challenges, which can stem from sensory overload or communication issues. Dr. Jalelah emphasizes the power of routine—creating a predictable environment that gives her son a sense of stability. She uses tools like visual schedules and screen-free times to foster a supportive atmosphere, especially during stressful moments. What routines have you found to be most effective in your home? Have you tried using visual schedules, and if so, how have they impacted your child’s behavior?

A Holistic Approach to Autism

Dr. Jalelah believes in looking at the whole picture. Addressing not just developmental delays but also physical and emotional health is crucial. Many children with autism face sensory sensitivities that can link to physical issues, like chronic constipation. How do you prioritize your child’s physical and emotional health? Are there specific strategies that have worked for you?

The Role of Family Therapy

Through family therapy, Dr. Jalelah learned that healing involves everyone. She strengthened their family bond by addressing her emotional triggers and improving communication with her son. What has your experience been with family therapy? Have you noticed changes in your family dynamics as a result?

Sharing Stories for Support

In her memoir, Unexpected Experiences Beyond Autism, Dr. Jalelah opens up about her journey, sharing her fears and triumphs. Her candid storytelling creates a sense of community for families in similar situations, reminding us that sharing experiences can be empowering. Has sharing your own experiences helped you feel less isolated?
