Building Resilience in Youth: Overcoming the Challenges of the Post-Pandemic Era

The COVID-19 pandemic left a profound mark on the mental health of children and adolescents. Beyond the immediate health concerns, it disrupted routines, heightened anxieties, and isolated young people from essential social interactions.

As an integrative pediatrician and mental health coach, I had the privilege of speaking with therapist Dr. Tamika J. Carter in Episode 2 of Raising Resilient Minds,  about the challenges today’s youth face and the role of caregivers in fostering resilience.

The Pandemic’s Lasting Impact on Youth Mental Health

As the pandemic created developmental gaps, many children missed opportunities to build essential social skills leading to increased difficulties in nurturing peer relationships. Pre-existing mental health concerns, like anxiety and depression, worsened, and substance use among teens rose as a coping mechanism.

Dr. Tamika emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of these struggles rather than just the symptoms. How can we better support our children in overcoming these challenges? What strategies can we adopt to build resilience among our children?

  • Open Communication is Key

Creating a safe space for children to express their feelings can make all the difference. Regular family conversations, active listening, and shared activities strengthen bonds and provide insight into their emotional well-being.

  • The Power of Routine

Consistency provides stability. Simple routines—like set mealtimes, bedtimes, and study schedules—help reduce stress and bring a sense of normalcy to children’s lives.

  • Navigating Technology and Social Media

While technology can connect, it also isolates. Teaching children digital literacy and setting healthy screen-time boundaries encourages a balance between online and offline experiences.

  • Building Emotional Intelligence

Resilience starts with emotional intelligence. Skills like stress management, mindfulness, and problem-solving can empower children to handle life’s challenges with confidence.

  • Supporting Youth in a Digital World

Social media’s influence on mental health cannot be ignored. The constant exposure to curated images and online interactions can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and even cyberbullying. Dr. Tamika highlighted the importance of teaching children how to navigate the digital landscape safely and critically.

A Community Approach to Resilience

Resilience is not built in isolation. Community support, mentorship programs, and extracurricular activities can help children develop a sense of belonging and purpose. At the same time, parents must prioritize their mental health to model resilience effectively.
